Fine Bone

Back in 2018 Ffion wrote an article for sex+, describing her sexual journey and the need for her sex toy company, Fine Bone. The website describes it as “Porcelain pleasure tools. Designed in London and traditionally made in the Netherlands. Good. Hard. Fun”. What’s not to love? We are delighted to welcome her back and find out how Prudence and Fine Bone have been received. Stuck for sex positive presents? Look no further…..

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do?

I’m Ffion, I’m the founder of Fine Bone porcelain pleasure tools. It’s a small sustainable sex toy business which I launched this year. My background has been in events design and window displays, so I came at it from a design perspective. Outside of work I’ve always been in love with realising elaborate fantasies. Be that baths of jelly or writing scripts for roleplay dates. Thus, I’m a committed wanker in every sense of the word. That extends to and includes designing my perfect sex toy.

What is a typical day in the life as a sex toy creator?

Well it’s definitely not just the sex toy creating part. Having a small business is like trying to be an expert in loads of different fields and learning about all of it on the fly. International customs forms, filing tax returns, SEO, social media… It definitely keeps you on your toes and I love it for that reason!

How did Fine Bone come about?

About 7 or 8 years ago now, I used to make sugar glass vibrators and melt in the middle chocolate butt plugs. It was pure novelty as they were obviously not functional sex toys! A thrush nightmare in fact. I did use them once or twice and I loved their firmness, it really got me into hard toys. I wanted to have a go at designing some dildos based on the sensations that I’d enjoyed and that was the beginning of a very long journey of trial and error product design.

What sets Fine Bone’s Prudence apart from other sex toys?

There’s something very natural about the whole thing, both in the way that the shape was designed and also being made from porcelain. Ceramics literally come from the earth, as well as being sustainable, they are body compatible and conduct heat nicely.

What’s been the most rewarding part of creating Prudence and how has it been received?

First off, I’d say that learning how to overcome what other people think has been rewarding in itself. Taking the time to distil my perspective about pleasure and masturbation and really think about where I was coming from has been invaluable.

The market is changing a lot nowadays. But for the longest time “luxury sex” was images of nubile white women having orgasms thrust upon them and I wanted to create something that wasn’t that. The majority of what I learnt about sex growing up is that I was too happy and too easy to be sexy. We still teach girls (especially) “treat ‘em mean to keep ‘em keen”, or “play hard to get”. The feedback loop of that is totally toxic. How can we expect womxn to walk into the workplace and ask for a job when we spend the rest of the time telling them to be aloof so that they’ll be desirable? Sex is about enjoyment not denial of pleasure. Which is why zines like Sex+ are so important.

The making of Prudence was about me taking ownership of my sexuality and that’s of course a very personal, political journey. Thus far it’s been well received (I say blushing). When customers get in touch to tell me how they’ve been enjoying Prudence, it’s the best feeling in the world. I get to feel like I’m helping other people take ownership of their pleasure too. What could be lovelier than that!

What does the future hold for yourself & Fine Bone?

There’s a lot happening in the pipe line. A flurry of activity. Currently, I’m in the process of prototyping an anal accomplice to Prudence called Patience. There’s an anal pleasure questionnaire to help inform this for anyone who’d like to be involved, link here -  https://ffion762525.typeform.com/to/xRHzuapk . It’s a slow burner because it has to be just right. There’s also plans for sexy candles on the way too (you heard it here first!)
